Two victories for Pascal Wehrlein and Porsche at the Formula E weekend in Diriyah

Successful race weekend for Porsche in Formula E: After his victory on Friday, Pascal Wehrlein (GER) also won the second night race at the Diriyah E-Prix in the new Porsche 99X Electric Gen3. With this double success in Saudi Arabia, he takes the lead in the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship.

Diriyah's double strike makes the start of the season for the new Porsche 99X Electric Gen3 perfect. The electric racing car developed in Weissach has won all three races held so far in season 9: After the opening success of the Porsche customer team Avalanche Andretti in Mexico, Pascal Wehrlein clinched two victories in Diriyah for the TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E Team. His teammate António Félix da Costa (POR), the 2020 Formula E Champion, finished eleventh on the street circuit near the capital Riyadh.

In the drivers' standings of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, Pascal Wehrlein took the lead with 68 points after three of 16 races. António Félix da Costa is in twelfth place with six points. In the team classification, the TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E Team is second with 74 points.

The race 3
After a strong qualifying, Pascal Wehrlein started the second night race in Diriyah on Saturday from P5 with his Porsche 99X Electric Gen3. Shortly after the start he made up a position and then lurked behind the narrow front for his chance. With a perfect race strategy and thanks to the very efficient powertrain of his Porsche 99X Electric Gen3, he moved up to third place in the twelfth of 40 laps and shortly afterwards to second place. In lap 17 he took the lead, which he defended against all attacks from his pursuers to the finish.

Quotes on the Diriyah E-Prix, race 3

Thomas Laudenbach, Head of Porsche Motorsport:
“It was an incredible weekend. The hard work of the entire team is finally rewarded. I'm very proud of everyone on the team. We've done our homework and now we have to stay focused. The season is long and we know how tough the competition is in this world championship. But after this success, it's time to celebrate."

Florian Modlinger, Overall Project Manager Formula E:“A sensational weekend for Porsche with two wins for the Porsche 99X Electric Gen3. We can be proud of the development team in Weissach and of our team at the race track, which once again implemented our strategy perfectly today. We also made progress in qualifying in Diriyah. Pascal had a much better starting position today with P5 than in the first race and made perfect use of this advantage: After a good start, he fought his way forward with concentration and finally took the lead, which he then never gave up.”

Pascal Wehrlein , Porsche works driver (#94):“I will never forget this weekend. The two wins are an incredible achievement. The whole team put in a fantastic performance this weekend. Everyone worked hard for our success. I'm incredibly proud of the team. Again today we had a great race pace and a perfect strategy. We used Attack Mode at just the right time. That was a key advantage. Although I had to overtake more cars when I won on Friday, today's race was more difficult. You could see that our competitors have caught up. That means that we must not let up in our efforts either.”

António Félix da Costa, Porsche works driver (#13):“Another great day for Porsche. Congratulations to Pascal and the whole team. Things went a little better for me today. We're making progress every day, but of course we're not where I'd like to be yet. But that is only a matter of time. We have a fantastic car. I am highly motivated and know that I have a great team behind me. Success will come.”

The
next race for the TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E Team is the Hyderabad E-Prix on February 11, round 4 of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship. It is the first Formula E race in India.

Porsche in Formula E
In 2023, the TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E Team will contest its fourth season in the world's first all-electric racing series with the Porsche 99X Electric Gen3 developed in Weissach. As the first Porsche customer team in Formula E, Avalanche Andretti uses two Porsche 99X Electric Gen3. As an accelerator for innovative and sustainable mobility technologies, Formula E has been bringing exciting motorsport to people in the big cities since 2014. With the all-electric Taycan Turbo S, Porsche is once again providing the official safety car this season, underscoring the importance of Formula E for Porsche Motorsport.
