Ericsson and Hellsten stop champion's winning streak in the Porsche Carrera Cup Scandinavia
There were no new full scorers for Lukas Sundahl in the West Coast Race in Falkenberg. His winning streak was broken and instead Edvin Hellsten and Hampus Ericsson took their first triumphs in the Porsche Carrera Cup Scandinavia. - We did well. Good teamwork, Edvin, thought a smiling Hampus Ericsson afterwards. Sundahl, who finished second in the first heat and broke the second, still tops the championship before Emil Persson.
The classic West Coast race offered tough conditions, several crashes - and two first-time winners in the Porsche Carrera Cup Scandinavia. First out was Gothenburg resident Edvin Hellsten, 24, who was not really recognizable at the beginning of the season. In Falkenberg it turned around. He qualified well, which gave him a second starting frame in the initial heat. It would turn out to be a lottery ticket.
I made a super start on the dry outer track, took the lead and could then go my own race. It went just fine, everything was perfect, everything played. I have never had such a low heart rate and yet I was first, said Hellsten and stated at the same time. Super fun that I got to win my first race. There was no replay in the messy second race. On used rain tires, he did not have a chance to compete, but still secured a sixth place due to the large rainfall in the heat.
Bad luck with a wet starting track
For 19-year-old Hampus Ericsson from Kumla, Saturday ended better than it started. From the third on the grid, he started on the wet part of the drying track in race one. It did not work at all. Ericsson dropped down to ninth place before he started to advance and finally took the finish line as fourth with the fastest lap of the race.
A fourth place is good, but with the speed and the starting position we had, it is not enough. Surt. We had good speed in the car and had to show it through overtaking but not really in results, Ericsson said. The second heat, which was decided in the rain, he started outside Lukas Sundahl in the first start. I got off to a completely okay start and was up and looking at Lukas into the first corner, but chose to take it easy and backed off.
Better timing
Behind him it got messy. Hugo Andersson spun after close contact with Edvin Hellsten and was then hit by guest driver Jan Magnussen.
I could do nothing, there was nowhere to go, stated Magnussen who in turn was hit by an equally innocent Thomas Karlsson.
With Andersson, Magnussen and Karlsson out of the game, extensive salvage work followed and therefore the competition management ordered a restart.
Then Ericsson was well on its way. In the second start, I got a better timing with the gas and the clutch. There was less wheel spin and I could steer in front of Lukas in the first corner.
From the lead, Ericsson was never unthreatened, even though he struggled with proper oversteer at the end of the race.
Quick end
For Lukas Sundahl, the second race was short. Already in the first corner he was hit by Pontus Fredricsson.
My fault. I saw nothing and came with all four tires unlocked, Fredricsson admitted.
Sundahl did not really buy that excuse. If you see nothing, you have to take it a little carefully, he thought, among other things. The collision meant that both drivers had to break. For Sundahl, it was the first time since the 2017 season.
Wants to win at home
Emil Persson was the driver behind Hampus Ericsson who got the most points from Falkenberg. To his previous second places - one in the premiere and one in Anderstorp - he added two more podium places by finishing third in the first heat and second in the second. He thus consolidated his second place behind Sundahl in the championship table and has a clear capacity for more. I must aim for a double victory at home in Karlskoga in the next competition, he said and smiled.
Double for Bergström
In the Masters Cup, the class for drivers over 40 years, it was a double victory for Christoffer Bergström, who after sixth place overall in heat one became third in the second race. His best result so far in his Porsche Carrera Cup career.
I was in the right place at the right time this weekend, stated Bergström, who through his efforts also made sure that Sundahl-Pampas Racing (which also includes Lukas Sundahl) secured first place in the team championship.
In the slightly thin Masters class for the weekend, Prince Carl Philip came second in both races. In the second heat, his effort also reached fourth place overall, which is the prince's best placement ever in the championship.
The next competition in the Porsche Carrera Cup Scandinavia will be decided at Gelleråsen Arena outside Karlskoga 20-21 August.
