Porsche Teams take class wins at Pikes Peak International Hill climb

It was a welcome site to see fans in attendance for the 99th running of the Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill climb. For a month, teams had been practicing setups, driving strategy, and fine tuning for their chances of conquering the 156-turn, 12.42-mile Pikes Peak Mountain in Colorado.

Teams, fans and the media awoke on the Sunday morning ready to start the long day ahead but like last year's race weather conditions once again had an impact on the race. The top of America's Mountain had snow and icy roads forcing the Hill Climb to delay an hour and move the finish line lower down the mountain.

Four-time Pikes Peak champion Romain Dumas, who this year was driving a 2019 Porsche 911 GT2RS Clubsport running in the Time Attack 1 division for modified and specialized production-based two- and four-wheel-drive vehicles clocked in at 6m31.914s. Despite this fast time, it left him 36seconds short of taking first place coming home in second behind Robin Shute who clocked in at 5m55.246s (94.143mph) on the shortened from usual 12.42-mile route to the 14,115ft summit in his 600hp turbocharged Wolf GB08 TSC-LT running in the Unlimited division for exotic race cars that typically are purpose-built for hill climb events.

Three-time Pikes Peak champ Paul Dallenbach finished third overall and first in the Open Wheel division with a run of 6m35.663s in his PVA Dallenbach Special. Fourth overall and second in Time Attack 1 was another Pikes Peak veteran — two-time overall champ Rhys Millen, at 6m36.281s, although the New Zealander was frustrated by a loss of power on his Bentley Continental GT3 during his run.

In the Pikes Peak Open division for modified production cars, was Raphael Astier in a 2015 Porsche BBi Turbo Cup, at 6m36.867s. The OPTIMA Batteries BBi TurboCup was the 3rd to leave the line within the main run group. Raphael Astier had a slippery 2nd and 3rd sector with limited visibility due to fog yet was able to secure a 6:36.867 time, taking 1st place in the Open Class and 5th overall.

David Donohue in the AUDRAIN Motorsport GT2 RS Clubsport ran later in the group. Unlike Astier’s conditions prior, Donohue fought through wet first and second sectors with a clear third. As a result, to the changing weather conditions Donohue put down the 2nd Fastest 3rd sector time of all competitors and secured a 3rd place victory in the Time Attack 1 class with a time of 06:45.893 finishing 8th overall.

Sports car veteran Randy Pobst topped the Exhibition division for manufacturer prototype or pre-production vehicles, driving a Tesla Model S Plaid to a run of 6m57.220s, which ranked 10th overall.

With the Porsche Trophy Class running ahead of the rest of the field, Tanner Foust was the first BBiHC car to go up. The Optima / Yokohama GT4 Clubsport fitted with capable Yokohama A052 tires which can handle the damp conditions well was able to secure a winning run taking 1st place in class with a time of 07:28.269.

In all, 52 vehicles made runs this year.
