Will Aspin shows what he can do with race-winning pace at Oulton Park

Porsche Carrera Cup GB racer Will Aspin put on an impressive display at Oulton Park at the weekend (June 16-18) to take home a podium finish and be amongst the fastest cars on track as the championship made its annual visit to the venue.

Setting some good times during Friday’s two free practice sessions, the teenager was optimistic of a good showing during Saturday’s half hour qualifying session. Unfortunately, a small error under braking for the hairpin on his quickest lap lost him vital tenths of a second that would have put him much further up the grid and in contention for Pro-Am pole position.

He looked to make up for it at the start of race one, getting a superb launch off the grid to jump into second place in class behind rival Ross Wylie. From there he applied the pressure, setting the fastest lap of anyone on lap two, as he tried to find a way into the lead.

Given the tight nature of the Cheshire circuit, unless a rival makes a mistake, it is very difficult to overtake and, with Will trapped behind the leader, he took the mature decision to consolidate his second place and enjoy a trip to the podium.

Race two was shortened to a 20-minute contest to ensure it could be shown in full on the main ITV1 channel in front of a much larger audience and Will was fast starting once again in his Attis Sports-liveried Porsche, but almost immediately the Safety Car was called after teammate Jake Giddings hit the tyre wall at turn one.

Racing resumed with eight minutes left to run with Will hounding Wylie for the lead once again, as well as being the fourth quickest car of anyone on track. He found a way past at the hairpin after the pair came together, with Will then pulling away to cross the line first of the Pro-Am competitors.

Unfortunately, following a post-race investigation, he was judged to have been at fault for the contact with Wylie, and moved back behind his rival, losing four places in the process, and being classified fifth in class.

The Porsche Carrera Cup GB now enters its traditional summer break and racing will resume in eight weeks’ time, when the series heads to Knockhill in Scotland for rounds nine and ten of the season. Will won’t have to wait that long before he is next out in a race car however, with an exciting announcement to be made in the coming weeks.

“In FP1 we were getting our bearings and we did a good job to find time on track. We found even more time in the second practice, finishing fifth overall, half a second off the fastest time. In qualifying, we lost two tenths around the back and from Druids and going into the last corner we lost another two tenths. If we'd found that it would have put us in the top five.

“Race one went well as we finished eighth overall and second in Pro-Am, so I can't really complain. There was still one more position to make up but well done to Ross Wylie, I put a lot of pressure on him, but he didn’t yield.

“Race two was good. I held my position off the line, but I was hoping to gain a place and pass Wylie, and going into hairpin I got the cut back and was able to pass him. We managed to win in Pro-Am and the main thing was that we were battling with the Pros. We could keep up with them, they weren't dropping us, and it was a lot of fun. Unfortunately, after the race, I was adjudged to have tapped Wylie when I passed him and was put back behind him in the results. It’s a shame as we were very quick in race trim. We’ll just have to take it on the chin and go again next time out at Knockhill, though before then we have something cool to announce.”
