Porsche Carrera Cup Scandinavia presents package of measures after accident-affected premiere in Anderstorp
After the premiere in Anderstorp, which was unfortunately affected by several incidents, Porsche Carrera Cup Scandinavia now presents a package of measures for the continuation of the championship. "Through several improvements, we want to ensure, among other things, that we can invite drivers, audiences and TV viewers to more racing," says Thomas Johansson, the championship's sporting director.
This year's first race in Porsche Carrera Cup Scandinavia was in many respects very successful. Large and high-class starting field, many guests in the Porsche Race Lounge, a lot of crowds and a special trackday with about 100 cars, driven by customers from most Porsche Centers in Sweden.
"An absolutely fantastic premiere really, but through a series of unfortunate circumstances there were far too few race laps," says Thomas Johansson.
Extended reserve time
In the first heat, a safety wall was damaged during a run-off. The repair work took time, which meant that the total length of the race was only four laps.
"Together with the tracks and Viaplay, which broadcasts all the races live, we have looked at increasing our reserve time, which would mean that we can stop the clock and restart the races. On some tracks there are no oddities, but on others the challenge is greater given that the schedule is tight. But where we have the opportunity, we will use the extended reserve time and until next year we will have it on all tracks, says Johansson and adds:
"Of course we can't have as long a spare time as possible, it doesn't even have Formula 1, but with 15-20 minutes we get a chance to repair, move away damaged cars and then restart the race.
Seals loopholes
That the opening heat in Anderstorp was red-flagged before two completed laps meant, according to the regulations, that punishments for incorrect starts were canceled.
"There are no regulations, in any racing series in the world, that are waterproof. News and situations pop up all the time that could possibly have an impact. That was the case in Anderstorp, but now we are sealing that loophole. In the future, any punishments will apply even if there is a red flag before two laps after the start.
Even the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup will adjust the same rule.
Shorter starting process
In the second premiere race at Scandinavian Raceway, several cars disappeared in an extensive take-off crash.
"In all my years in Porsche Carrera Cup Scandinavia, I have never experienced anything like this. Sure, we've had cars that have had thief stops, but we haven't had these chain reactions. One of the explanations, of course, is the large starting field. If you stop at square eight and there are twelve starts, there is rarely a big bang, but when there are 25 cars there is a difference. Then it can get a lot messier and that's exactly what it became in the premiere.
There was nothing wrong with the start-up procedure in Anderstorp. It was perfectly executed and completely according to the rule book.
"But to reduce the risk of the clutch overheating and we get incorrect starts, we have agreed to shorten the maximum time from five to three seconds on the actual start-up process.
More salvage vehicles
Should the accident still occur, there is a clear ambition to have more salvage vehicles and lifting yokes to speed up that work.
"Faster salvages and the ability to red flag and stop the clock will save the races if a situation like this should arise again," says Johansson, who can also report a change for those who are fastest and take pole position.
"In Anderstorp and on several other tracks in our calendar, pole position in the raceline is not, which means that it can be an advantage to start in square two. Of course, there is no sporting fairness in this and therefore, in cooperation with the Swedish Automobile Sports Association's racing committee, we will inspect the tracks and move pole positions on the tracks where the conditions are the same as in Anderstorp, for example," says Johansson.
All current changes Porsche Carrera Cup Scandinavia will inform the team and drivers in detail in connection with the second race of the season, Midnattssolsloppet at Drivecenter Arena in Fällfors 17-18 June.
